What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped restoration which covers a failing tooth above the gum line. A modern porcelain crown looks real and is strong and durable. It can revitalize a tooth damaged by decay, multiple fillings, cracks, chips, abscess, and more. Crowns restore dental implants and teeth spared by root canal treatments.

How crowns work

In his Fort Collins, CO, office, Dr. Ulibarri uses visual inspection, digital X-rays, and other scans as needed to fully evaluate your oral health status and to determine if a crown is the right treatment for you. If it is, he'll use the amazing iTero digital scanner to take virtual impressions of your teeth. This information, plus more, goes to a dental lab for construction of your porcelain crown.

Additionally, your dentist will reduce the size and shape of your tooth, allowing it to accept the crown, to fit in with remaining teeth and to occlude, or close, with the opposing arch of teeth. You'll wear a temporary restoration until your new crown is ready for placement.

When you come back to Ulibarri Family Dentistry for your new crown, the dentist will remove the temporary cap and bond on the new one with a strong, permanent adhesive.

Caring for crowns

Whether you have a single crown or multiple restorations, or if you have crowns which support a multi-tooth bridge, one thing is critical: oral hygiene. That means:

  • Brush twice a day
  • Floss once a day
  • Get six-month check-ups and cleanings
  • Avoid hard foods, chewing ice, and grinding your teeth (crowns are not as flexible as your natural tooth enamel is)

With due diligence, your beautiful crown will last 10 years or more, says the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
