Preventing Dental Stains

Even if you clean your teeth twice every day, over time, your teeth will begin to lose their natural whiteness. This can be caused by the food you eat, smoking, and certain medications. Dr. Ryan Ulibarri is your dentist at Ulibarri Family Dentistry in Fort Collins, CO. Here are his tips for avoiding dental stains.

Types of Dental Stains

Not all dental stains are equal. Here are the different types:

  • Extrinsic dental stains: These are discolorations that affect the surface of the tooth. They are usually caused by pigmentations in food, beverages, or tobacco. They can usually be removed with a regular dental cleaning.
  • Intrinsic dental stains: These are stains that occur when pigmentation seeps through the tooth’s enamel. Although trickier to remove, intrinsic stains can often be removed by professional bleaching.
  • Age-related dental stains: Age-related stains are a combination of the above. They can usually be removed by professional cleaning and teeth whitening.

Say No to Dental Stains

You can avoid teeth discoloration by:

  • Limiting the amount of coffee and red wine you drink
  • Avoiding tobacco products
  • Using toothpaste with teeth whitener
  • Visit your dentist twice a year for a professional cleaning

Fort Collins residents visit Dr. Ulibarri every six months for a check-up and a professional cleaning to remove stains. If you have stubborn stains that you can’t remove at home, you may benefit from professional teeth whitening at our office
